Without Good Company, Even Wealth Is Play-Money

ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥

bin naavai jhoothaa Dhan maal. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Without the Name, wealth and property are false. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Let me sit in good company, with people who remember the divine together. There, let me remember the Keeper of the world too.

Without that inner treasure, all the wealth and possessions I could pile up are like play-money. They cannot buy what actually matters.

Good company keeps the heart turned toward what lasts; without it, even wealth is play-money.
The deeper layer

In good company, remember the One, because without the Name, riches have no real weight.

This is the center line of the shabad, the pause. Saadhoo sang simar gopaal — in saadhoo sang, the company of seekers, remember Gopaal, the Keeper of the world. It is a group of people who help each other keep turning toward the One.

Bin naavai jhoothaa dhan maal — without the Name, wealth and property are jhooth, false. Here that means unreal and passing. Riches are not called evil. They simply weigh nothing next to what lasts. Think of play-money from a board game. It looks like money, but it cannot buy lunch. Or think of cheap dye that washes out.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people who help you remember what really matters when you are with them?
