Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Whoever holds the One close within their mind carries a fortune more complete than any treasure.
Their good luck is perfect — not because they were given things, but because they were given this.
The best fortune of all is a mind that rests close to the One.
Kaho naanak jaa kay pooran bhaag — says Nanak, the one whose fortune is pooran, perfect and complete. Har charnee taa kaa man laag — their mind is attached to the Lord's feet. In Gurbani, "the Lord's Feet" is a picture of humble, loving nearness to the One.
The shabad ends where it began. Fortune is not measured in things or in learning. It is measured by where the heart has come to rest. Think of a child asleep on a parent's lap on a long car ride. Nothing more is needed. That is full fortune.
If good fortune isn't about what you own, what would a truly "lucky" life look like to you?
