Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Let me do only the kind of things that leave no residue on my heart — actions I never have to feel heavy about later.

And let this mind of mine stay awake and bright, alive with singing the praises of the One.

Choose the actions you'll never have to feel heavy about — and stay awake through what keeps your heart bright.
The deeper layer

This is the Rahao. So kichh kar jit mail na laagai — "do that by which no stain sticks to you." Mail is grime — the residue that clouds a heart. The teaching is a gentle guide for living: choose the actions that keep you clear. And the way to stay clear is not grim vigilance but jaagai — staying awake in keertan, joyful singing. Wakefulness here is bright and glad, not anxious watching.

A Question to Sit With

What kinds of choices leave you feeling clean and light afterward, and which leave a residue?
