A Heart With One Center Isn't Torn Apart

ਏਕੋ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ॥
ayko simar na doojaa bhaa-o.
Meditate in remembrance on the One Lord; do not be in love with duality.
ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਜਪਿ ਕੇਵਲ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥
satsang jap kayval naa-o. ||1||
In the Society of the Saints, chant only the Name. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Let me remember the One, and not split my heart between many rival wants pulling in every direction.

In good company, let me simply keep the Name — that one steady thread — held in mind.

A heart with one steady center isn't torn in every direction by its many wants.
The deeper layer

Ayko simar na doojaa bhaa-o — "remember the One; not the love of duality." Doojaa bhaa-o is "the love of the second thing" — a heart divided, chasing many rival attachments at once. The teaching is not that you may love only one thing in life, but that beneath all your loves there can be one steady center. Satsang jap kayval naao — in good company, keep the Name. The mind is steadied by having a single root instead of many competing pulls.

A Question to Sit With

When your wants pull you in many directions at once, what helps you find a steady center again?
