What Most Needs Cleaning Won't Rinse Off Outside

ਅਨਿਕ ਜਲਾ ਜੇ ਧੋਵੈ ਦੇਹੀ ॥
anik jalaa jay Dhovai dayhee.
The body may be washed with loads of water,
ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਸੁਧੁ ਨ ਤੇਹੀ ॥੨॥
mail na utrai suDh na tayhee. ||2||
and yet its filth is not removed, and it does not become clean. ||2||

In plain words

You could wash your body with all the water in the world and still not touch the thing that really needs cleaning.

The film of ego doesn't rinse off from the outside; it lifts from a different, deeper kind of washing.

The thing that most needs cleaning in us doesn't rinse off from the outside.
The deeper layer

Anik jalaa jay dhovai dayhee, mail na utrai — "though you wash the body with endless water, the filth does not come off." This is a gentle turn against outer ritual purity: no amount of external washing reaches the inner grease of ego. The mail — the grime — is inward. The caution about relying on outward cleansing belongs to no one tradition's rituals in particular; the point is that the real washing happens in the heart, through humility and remembrance, not through the surface.

A Question to Sit With

What is something inside you that no amount of "looking good on the outside" would ever fix?
