Gentle Remembrance Cuts Away the Old Fear

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸਦਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ॥
satgur bhayti-o sadaa kirpaal.
I have met the True Guru, who is merciful forever.
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਕਾਟਿਆ ਭਉ ਕਾਲ ॥੩॥
har simar simar kaati-aa bha-o kaal. ||3||
Meditating, meditating in remembrance on the Lord, I am rid of the fear of death. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have come near the True Teacher, who is gentle and kind without end.

Remembering the One again and again, the old fear that used to shadow me has been quietly cut away.

Gentle, repeated remembrance quietly cuts away the old fear that used to shadow you.
The deeper layer

Satgur bhayti-o sadaa kirpaal — "I met the True Guru, forever merciful." The satgur is the true teacher, the one who brings you from darkness to light. And the fruit is kaati-aa bhau kaal — "the fear of death is cut away." In the wellbeing lens we hold this as release from the shadow of dread that haunts a forgetting mind, not as a morbid theme. Remembrance, done gently and repeatedly, loosens fear's grip until it simply falls away.

A Question to Sit With

What fear has loosened its grip on you over time as you've returned to something steady again and again?
