In plain words

Through all the hours of the day and night, let me keep the Keeper of the world in my heart.

To catch even a glimpse of that presence fills me with a joy that overflows.

Weave remembrance through the whole of an ordinary day, and even a glimpse of the One overflows into joy.
The deeper layer

Keep the One in your heart all day and all night, and a joy that overflows fills you.

Aath pahar dhi-aa-ee-ai gopaal — through all eight pahar, remember Gopaal, the One who cares for the world. A pahar is an old way of dividing time, about three hours long. Eight of them make a whole day and night. So this means all the time, not just now and then.

It is like breathing. You do not save breathing for special moments. Remembrance can be woven through ordinary life in the same way.

Naanak darsan daykh nihaal — seeing the One's presence, Nanak is filled with joy. Darsan means a glimpse or vision. Nihaal is gladness that overflows, like a cup filled past the brim. The short shabad ends where deep listening leads: a life quietly soaked in the presence, bubbling over with joy at even a glimpse.

A Question to Sit With

How might you carry a sense of wonder through a whole ordinary day, not just special moments?
