Nanak says: when the One pours out mercy on someone, everything shifts. Their heart becomes clear and clean, and they truly reflect on the One.
This one says that grace is what truly changes a heart.
After three pictures of empty religion, Guru Arjan names what really changes a person. Jis kirpaa Dhaarai — the One pours out kirpaa, mercy. Then hirdaa suDh, the heart becomes pure. And barahm beechaarai, the person truly thinks about the One.
The order matters. A pure heart is the result of grace received. It is not a prize you earn first. Think of a garden. You can pull every weed, but it is the rain that makes it grow.
This keeps the shabad from being only a complaint. The answer to empty show is not trying even harder. It is being open to grace, which then makes the inner life real.
