What the Mind Can't Grasp, the Heart Holds

ਅਗਾਧਿ ਬੋਧਿ ਹਰਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰੇ ॥
agaaDh boDh har agam apaaray.
The wisdom of the Inaccessible and Infinite Lord is incomprehensible.
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੇ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥

Meditating on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and contemplating the Naam within our hearts,
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੇ ॥੪॥੧੧੧॥

O Nanak, God has showered His Mercy upon us. ||4||111||

In plain words

The wisdom of the One is boundless — beyond reach, beyond measure, deeper than the mind can sound. Keeping the Name in awareness and turning it over in the heart, I find that grace has been poured out on me all along.

What the mind cannot fully grasp, the heart can hold through the Name.
The deeper layer

The One is too big for the mind to hold, and yet the heart can meet the One through the Name.

Agaadh bodh har agam apaaray — the One's wisdom is agaadh, too deep to measure, and the One is agam apaaray, beyond reach and without end. Thinking alone can never fully grasp the One.

But the answer is a simple practice anyone can do. Naam japat naam riday beechaaray — remember the Name, and turn it over in the heart. Think of the ocean. You cannot hold it in your arms, but you can wade in and feel it all around you.

Then comes the discovery. Naanak ka-o parabh kirpaa dhaaray — God has poured out grace on Nanak. The endless One that thought cannot reach is met through the Name, and found already kind.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something too big for you to fully understand that you can still feel close to?
