Come With Empty Hands and Be Welcomed

ਰੂਪ ਹੀਨ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਲ ਹੀਨੀ ਮੋਹਿ ਪਰਦੇਸਨਿ ਦੂਰ ਤੇ ਆਈ ॥੧॥
roop heen buDh bal heenee mohi pardaysan door tay aa-ee. ||1||
I have no beauty, understanding or strength; I am a stranger, from far away. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have no beauty, no cleverness, no strength of my own; I feel like a stranger who has come from very far away.

Coming as you truly are — with empty hands — is exactly how you are welcomed.
The deeper layer

This one says: come as you are, even with empty hands.

Roop heen buDh bal heenee — without beauty, cleverness, or strength. This is not harsh judgment on herself. It is empty hands. The soul simply notices she has nothing to bargain with.

Mohi pardaysan door tay aa-ee — I am a stranger, come from far away. This is the ache of feeling far from home. It is the main feeling of the whole shabad, a deep longing.

Think of arriving at a new school where you know no one. You cannot pretend to be someone else, so you just walk in as yourself.

That honesty is the doorway. She stops trying to look impressive and comes just as she is.

A Question to Sit With

When has being honest about not having it all together actually helped you?
