Even With Nothing, Ask to Be Gathered In

ਨਾਹਿਨ ਦਰਬੁ ਨ ਜੋਬਨ ਮਾਤੀ ਮੋਹਿ ਅਨਾਥ ਕੀ ਕਰਹੁ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੨॥
naahin darab na joban maatee mohi anaath kee karahu samaa-ee. ||2||
I am not wealthy or youthful. I am an orphan - please, unite me with Yourself. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have no riches and none of the confidence of youth; I feel on my own, with no one to rely on. Please gather me up and make me Your own.

Even with nothing to lean on, you can ask to be gathered in and made to belong.
The deeper layer

This one says: even with nothing to offer, you can ask to be held.

Naahin darab na joban maatee — no money, and not puffed up with the pride of youth. Mohi anaath — I am without a protector. It can mean an orphan. The feeling here is being on your own, with no one to lean on.

Karahu samaa-ee — take me in, make me one with You. This is the plea to be gathered up just as she is, with empty hands.

Think of a small child who is tired and just lifts up her arms. She has nothing to give. She simply asks to be picked up.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel like you have nothing to rely on, what would it mean to be gathered in?
