The Restless Burning Is Soothed by Resting, Not Getting

deen da-i-aal kirpaal parabh naanak saaDhsang mayree jalan bujhaa-ee. ||4||1||118||
God is Compassionate, and Merciful to the meek; O Nanak, in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the fire of desire has been quenched. ||4||1||118||

In plain words

The One is kind to those who feel low, gentle and full of mercy.

In the company of good and true people, the burning restlessness inside me was finally soothed and put out.

The restless burning inside is soothed not by getting more, but by resting in good company with the One.
The deeper layer

This one says that the burning inside is cooled by resting in good company, not by getting what you want.

This is the end of the shabad. Deen da-i-aal kirpaal — kind to the low, full of mercy. The One meets exactly the soul with empty hands from the earlier verses.

SaaDhsang mayree jalan bujhaa-ee — in the saadh sangat, the company of good people, my burning was put out. Jalan is the fever of restless wanting.

Think of a fire. You cannot put it out by adding more wood. What she craved did not cool her. The fire went out in good company, resting in the One.

The soul who came with nothing is soothed at last.

A Question to Sit With

What actually cools you down when you feel restless — getting more, or being somewhere safe and good?
