Verse 2 of 3

Weigh Pleasure Against Nearness, and Pleasure Feels Light

ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਉ ਦਾਸ ਦਾਸਨ ਕੀ ਅਨਿਕ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਰਉ ਨਿਹੋਰਾ ॥
sayvaa kara-o daas daasan kee anik bhaaNt tis kara-o nihoraa.
I serve the slaves of His slaves; in so many ways, I beg of Him.
tulaa Dhaar tolay sukh saglay bin har daras sabho hee thoraa. ||1||
Setting them upon the scale, I have weighed all comforts and pleasures; without the Lord's Blessed Vision, they are all totally inadequate. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I would gladly serve even the servants of the wise. Again and again, I ask for their company, because they carry what I am looking for.

I once laid every comfort and pleasure the world offers on a scale. Next to truly seeing the One, every one of them felt small and not enough.

When you put every pleasure on one side of the scale and real closeness to the One on the other, the pleasures feel light.
The deeper layer

Put every pleasure on one side of a scale and closeness to the One on the other, and the pleasures feel light.

The verse does two things. First comes deep humility. Sayvaa kara-o daas daasan kee — I serve the servants of His servants. The seeker takes the lowest place. That is not because he dislikes himself. It is because being near the One matters more to him than any kind of status.

Second comes the scale. Tulaa Dhaar tolay sukh saglay — I set up the scale and weighed all comforts. Bin har daras sabho hee thoraa — without seeing the One, they are all too little. Har daras means seeing the One, the Blessed Vision. Thoraa means small, not enough.

This is not saying the world is bad. It is honest measuring. It is like a science class: the seeker did the experiment and is reporting what he found.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever gotten something you badly wanted, only to find it did not fill you the way you expected?
