Good Company Can Do What Effort Alone Could Not

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਹਾਰਿਓ ਅਨਿਕ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤੀ ਛੋਡਹਿ ਕਤਹੂੰ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
kar kar haari-o anik baho bhaatee chhodeh katahooN naahee.
Trying all sorts of things, I have grown weary, but still, they will not leave me alone.
ਏਕ ਬਾਤ ਸੁਨਿ ਤਾਕੀ ਓਟਾ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਟਿ ਜਾਹੀ ॥੨॥
ayk baat sun taakee otaa saaDhsang mit jaahee. ||2||
But I have heard that they can be rooted out, in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy; and so I seek their Shelter. ||2||

In plain words

I tried everything I could think of, and honestly, I wore myself out. The troubles just would not leave me be.

But then I heard something hopeful. In the company of the wise, in that good shelter, they finally fade away.

When fighting a struggle alone leaves you exhausted, good company can quietly do what effort could not.
The deeper layer

This one says that good company can do what trying alone could not.

Kar kar haari-o anik baho bhaatee — trying and trying, in so many ways, I got worn out. That is a very human thing to admit. Still the troubles would not leave.

Then comes the turn. Ayk baat sun — I heard one thing. Taakee otaa saaDhsang mit jaahee — in the otaa, the shelter, of the saaDhsang, they fade away. SaaDhsang means the company of wise and good people.

Think of studying alone for hours and getting nowhere. Then a friend sits down beside you, and it starts to make sense. When an inner struggle feels too heavy to carry alone, wise and caring people can help.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever solved something that stumped you alone the moment you were with the right people?
