A Word of Wisdom Is Powerful Only When Lived

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸੰਤ ਮਿਲੇ ਮੋਹਿ ਤਿਨ ਤੇ ਧੀਰਜੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
kar kirpaa sant milay mohi tin tay Dheeraj paa-i-aa.
In their Mercy, the Saints have met me, and from them, I have obtained satisfaction.
ਸੰਤੀ ਮੰਤੁ ਦੀਓ ਮੋਹਿ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
santee mant dee-o mohi nirbha-o gur kaa sabad kamaa-i-aa. ||3||
The Saints have given me the Mantra of the Fearless Lord, and now I practice the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||3||

In plain words

By their kindness, the wise ones met me, and from them I received a deep, steadying calm.

They gave me a fearless watchword to live by, and I began living out the Teacher's word day by day.

A word of wisdom becomes powerful only when you actually live by it, day by day.
The deeper layer

This one says a word of wisdom becomes powerful when you live it.

Kar kirpaa sant milay — by grace, the wise met the seeker. From them came Dheeraj, patience and a steady heart.

Santee mant dee-o mohi nirbha-o — they gave the mant, the sacred word, of the Fearless One. Nirbha-o, fearless, echoes nirbhau in the Mool Mantar, the opening words of the Guru Granth Sahib.

The healing is finished by practice. Gur kaa sabad kamaa-i-aa — the Guru's Word is not just heard. It is kamaa-i-aa: earned, worked at, lived out every day. Think of a coach's tip. It only helps once you practice it in every game. Teaching received becomes teaching lived.

A Question to Sit With

What is one piece of good advice you've been given that you could actually start practicing this week?
