When Inner Storms Settle, It Shows in Your Speech

I have now conquered those terrible evil-doers, and my speech is now sweet and sublime.

Says Nanak, the Divine Light has dawned within my mind; I have obtained the state of Nirvaanaa. ||4||4||125||

In plain words

I have finally gotten the better of those big inner troubles, and now my words and my whole way of being have turned gentle and sweet.

A bright light has dawned in my mind, and I have found a deep, unshakable peace at the center of myself.

When your inner storms settle, it shows up in the gentleness of how you speak.
The deeper layer

This one says that when the storms inside settle down, it shows in how you speak.

Jeet la-ay o-ay mahaa bikhaadee — those great troublemakers are beaten. Not by war, but by the shelter and practice the shabad just described.

The fruit shows in the voice. Sahj suhaylee banee — words become naturally sweet and gentle. Sahj means natural and calm. The inside changes the outside. Think of how your voice sounds after a hard day, and how different it sounds when you feel at peace.

Man bha-i-aa pargaasaa — light has dawned in the mind. Paa-i-aa pad nirbaanee — the state of nirbaan is reached: deep peace, freedom from inner storms. The shabad ends where it hoped: safe, calm, and quietly shining.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel calm inside, how does it change the way you talk to the people around you?
