Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 19
Verse 2 of 5

If Life Is a Shop, Stock Only the Name

ਮੈ ਬਨਜਾਰਨਿ ਰਾਮ ਕੀ ॥
mai banjaaran raam kee.
I am the shop-keeper of the Lord.
ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ਜੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tayraa naam vakhar vaapaar jee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Your Name is my merchandise and trade. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I am the One's little shopkeeper. Your Name is the only thing I stock and sell.

If life is a shop, the only thing worth stocking is the Name.
The deeper layer

The Rahao, in merchant language again: the soul keeps a shop whose only merchandise is the Name. A life is a trade; the only goods worth dealing in are the Name.

A Question to Sit With

If your days were a shop, what would you be "selling" most of?
