In plain words

Let go, let go of the passing thrills that leave you empty — they never truly fill you.

You've gotten so tangled in them, dear one, like an animal so lost in a green field that it forgets everything else.

The passing thrills that promise so much often leave us emptiest — it's worth loosening our grip on them.
The deeper layer

This one is a gentle wake-up call to let go of thrills that leave us empty.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Chhod chhod ray bikhi-aa kay rasoo-aa — let go, let go of the rasoo-aa, the quick flavors, of bikhi-aa. Bikhi-aa means the chasing that promises a lot and gives very little.

Urajh rahi-o ray baavar gaavar — you are all tangled up, you foolish one. It sounds sharp, but it is really the self being spoken to, with love. It is not an insult. The ego is something to heal, not a crime.

Ji-o kirkhai hari-aa-i-o pasoo-aa — like an animal grazing in a green field, so busy munching that it forgets everything else. Think of watching one more video, then one more, until the whole evening is gone. The shabad calls the wanderer lovingly back to what lasts.

A Question to Sit With

What is something fun that feels amazing in the moment but leaves you feeling a little empty afterward?
