Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Without You, who do I even have?

My Beloved, You are the very breath that holds my life up.

The One you're looking for isn't a distant ruler but the closest thing to you — the very ground of your life.
The deeper layer

A short, intimate Rahao of pure belonging: tujh bin kavan hamaaraa — without You, who is mine? Mayray preetam paraan adhaaraa — my Beloved is the support of my breath itself (paraan, life-breath; adhaar, foundation). This is love-language for the One: not a distant ruler but the closest possible reality, the ground of one's very aliveness. The whole shabad flows from this — a soul that has found in the One its dearest friend and only true support.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what feels so essential to you that it's hard to imagine your life without it?
