The One Who Knows Your Heart Is Your Closest Friend

ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਜਾਨੀ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਸਜਨ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ॥

You alone know the condition of my inner being. You are my Beautiful Friend.

sarab sukhaa mai tujh tay paa-ay mayray thaakur agah atolay. ||1||
I receive all comforts from You, O my Unfathomable and Immeasurable Lord and Master. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You alone truly know the inner workings of my heart — You are my beautiful, understanding friend.

Every comfort I have ever known, I received from You, my Master, too vast and deep for me to measure.

The One who knows your heart most completely is also your closest friend.
The deeper layer

Antar kee bidh tum hee jaanee — 'only You know the condition of my inner being.' The One is the friend who understands you completely, from the inside — tum hee sajan suhaylay, the beautiful companion. Sarab sukhaa mai tujh tay paa-ay — all comforts come from You. The names agah atolay — 'unfathomable, unweighable' — hold the paradox at the heart of this shabad: the One is utterly vast and beyond measure, and the most intimate friend who knows your heart. Grandeur and closeness together.

A Question to Sit With

Who is someone who understands you from the inside, without you having to explain yourself?
