Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
I've made my seat in the place where no fear can reach. There, the unstruck music of the One plays on its own, like a horn sounding endlessly.
I keep reflecting on the deepest reality as my steady staff, and letting the love of the Name become my whole way of living.
This one says the music of the One is already playing inside you.
These are the last of the yogi's signs.
Jah bha-o naahee tahaa aasan — "where there is no fear, there I set my seat." Aasan is the yogi's seat. Here it is placed where fear cannot reach. It echoes Nirbhau, "the Fearless One," from the Mool Mantar.
Singee anhat baanee — "the unstruck melody is my horn." The yogi's horn becomes the anhad: inner music that plays with nothing striking it. It is heard in deep stillness.
Tat beechaar dandaa — "thinking on the deepest truth is my staff."
And the whole way of living, the jugat, is naam man bhaanee — the love of the Name in the mind. The Name means the One, remembered with love.
Every prop of the wandering hermit has become a state of the heart. Think of a playlist that is already downloaded, so it plays even with no signal. This is Guru Arjan's householder yoga, for people living everyday lives at home. It is union without leaving the world.
Where is the place — real or inside you — where you feel completely safe and unafraid?
