Don't Gamble Your Life on What Washes Off

ਪੂਰਨ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰ ਊਚਾ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰੇ ॥
pooran paarbarahm parmaysur oochaa agam apaaray.
He is the Perfect, Supreme Lord God, the Transcendent Lord, lofty, unfathomable and infinite.
Singing His Glorious Praises, and meditating on the Ocean of peace, one's life is not lost in the gamble. ||3||

In plain words

The One is complete and supreme, higher than high — beyond where thoughts can reach, without any edge or limit. And singing its praises, resting your mind on that ocean of peace, you do not throw your one precious life away like a bet lost at a game. You spend it on what is real.

Don't gamble your one life away on things that wash off — spend it on what is real.
The deeper layer

Don't gamble your one life away. Spend it on what is real.

Pooran paarbarahm parmaysur oochaa agam apaaray piles up words for the One. Pooran means complete. Agam means beyond reach. Apaaray means without any edge or end. No thought can hold all of the One.

Then comes a striking picture. Joo-ay janam na haaray — your life is not lost in the gamble. Guru Arjan pictures a life spent chasing empty things as a gambler losing everything, bit by bit. It is like spending all your pocket money on a claw machine that never gives you a prize. Singing the praises of the One, the ocean of peace, is choosing not to throw your one life away.

A Question to Sit With

What are you spending your time and attention on — and does it feel real or does it wash off?
