Everything We Gather Is Borrowed, Not Kept

ਸੁਤ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਨੋਦ ॥ ਛੋਡਿ ਗਏ ਬਹੁ ਲੋਗ ਭੋਗ ॥੧॥
sut sampat banitaa binod. chhod ga-ay baho log bhog. ||1||
Many have renounced and left their children, wealth, spouses, joyful games and pleasures. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Think of everyone who has ever lived. All the children they loved, all the wealth they gathered, all the fun and games — every one of them eventually had to leave it all behind. None of it could travel with them.

Everything we gather is borrowed, not kept.
The deeper layer

Sut sampat banitaa binod — children, riches, family, delights — the whole roster of things we build a life around. Chhod ga-ay baho log bhog simply observes: countless people have left all of it. This is not a teaching that family or joy are bad. It is the clear-eyed reminder that these things are borrowed, not kept, so we should not stake our whole peace on what cannot stay.

A Question to Sit With

What things do you treat as if you will keep them forever?
