Don't Mistake the Wrapping for the Treasure

ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨ ਦੇਹ ਫੂਲਿਆ ॥
cho-aa chandan dayh fooli-aa.
The body, scented with musk and sandalwood
ਸੋ ਤਨੁ ਧਰ ਸੰਗਿ ਰੂਲਿਆ ॥੩॥
so tan Dhar sang rooli-aa. ||3||
- that body shall come to roll in the dust. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Even a body dressed up and perfumed with sweet sandalwood, cared for like something precious, will one day return to the earth it came from. The dressing-up is fine — but it was never the real treasure.

Care for the wrapping if you like, but don't mistake it for the treasure.
The deeper layer

Cho-aa chandan dayh fooli-aa — the body anointed with musk and sandalwood, "blossoming" with care. So tan dhar sang rooli-aa returns it to the dust. This is classic memento mori — a gentle remembering that the body is temporary — offered not to frighten but to redirect love from the wrapping to what lasts. The project keeps such lines calm and matter-of-fact, never gruesome.

A Question to Sit With

What is something about you that is not your body — that would still be you no matter what?
