Sometimes the times we live in feel dim and confusing, like a room with the lights off. But the wisdom of the teaching is a lamp. Light it, and suddenly you can see — the shapes stop being scary, the path shows up under your feet.
When times feel dark, wisdom is a lamp that lights the room.
Kal kaalakh andhi-aaree-aa — this dark age is pitch black. Kal means Kali Yuga, the "dark age," a time full of confusion. But the answer comes right away. Gur gi-aan deepak uji-aaree-aa — the lamp of the Guru's wisdom lights it up. Gi-aan means wisdom, and deepak means lamp.
Think of walking into a dark room and flipping the light switch. Nothing in the room changed, but now you can see it.
In Gurbani, darkness is almost never the last word. It shows up mainly so the lamp can be lit in the very next breath.
What is something you understood that suddenly made a confusing situation clear?
