Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
A hundred thousand times over, I would give everything for my Great One. The Name, and only the Name, is the very breath that keeps me going — the support underneath each breath I take, whether I notice it or not.
The Name of the One is what holds up every single breath.
This opening line is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Baarnai balihaarnai lakh baree-aa — I give myself, a hundred thousand times over. It is the language of love so full that no number is big enough. Think of a child saying, "I love you infinity times infinity."
Then the reason. Naamo ho naam saahib ko paraan adhree-aa — the Master's Name, only the Name, holds up my breath of life. Paraan is the breath of life. Adhaar is support. The Name is not a comfort you grab now and then. It is the ground under every breath, whether you notice it or not.
What is something so steady in your life that you forget it's holding you up?
