The Real Gift Comes as Mercy, Among the Good

ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੈ ॥
parabh kirpaal kirpaa karai.
When God the Merciful shows His Mercy,
ਨਾਮੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲੈ ॥੪॥੪॥੧੪੨॥
naam naanak saaDhoo sang milai. ||4||4||142||
Nanak receives the Naam in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||4||4||142||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When the kind Oneness pours out its kindness, the gift arrives — the Name, found in good and holy company. Notice: it comes as mercy, and it comes among people. You don't dig it up alone; you receive it, together.

The real gift comes as mercy, and it comes among good people.
The deeper layer

Prabh kirpaal kirpaa karai — the Merciful showing mercy — is the doubled emphasis on grace as the source. And saadhoo sang milai ("received in the company of the holy") locates it socially: the Name is found in sangat, not in solitary striving. The two ideas close the shabad by answering its opening worry — the shelter you couldn't build by scheming is given, freely, in good company.

A Question to Sit With

Who is the good company that helps you become your better self?
