One: the Silence Beyond Forms and the Life Within

raaj joban parabh tooN Dhanee. tooN nirgun tooN sargunee. ||2||
O God, You are my power, authority and youth. You are absolute, without attributes, and also related, with the most sublime attributes. ||2||

In plain words

Whatever strength or bright young energy I have, it is really Yours — You are the true owner. And You are both the One beyond all form and shape, and the One filling every beautiful form there is. Hidden and everywhere-visible, both at once.

The same Oneness is both the silence beyond all forms and the life inside every form.
The deeper layer

The One is both the stillness beyond every shape and the life inside every shape.

Raaj joban parabh tooN dhanee — power and youth belong to You, God. Raaj is power, joban is youth, and dhanee is the owner. They are not ours to keep as our own things.

Then the rich line. TooN nirgun tooN sargunee — You are nirgun, and You are sargun. Nirgun means without qualities: beyond all shape and form. Sargun means with qualities: present in every form there is.

This sits at the core of Sikh thought. The One is not only a faraway God with no shape. The One is not only the world of shapes either. It is one reality that is both. Think of the ocean. It is the deep, still water, and it is every wave on top. The One is the silence beyond shape and the fullness within every shape.

A Question to Sit With

Can something be both invisible and everywhere at the same time? What would that be like?
