Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 207
Verse 4 of 5

You Are My Protector, Here and Hereafter

ਈਹਾ ਊਹਾ ਤੁਮ ਰਖੇ ॥
eehaa oohaa tum rakhay.
Here and hereafter, You are my Savior and Protector.
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਕੋ ਲਖੇ ॥੩॥
gur kirpaa tay ko lakhay. ||3||
By Guru's Grace, some understand You. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Here and everywhere after, You keep me safe. That protection is always steady. Only, it takes a certain clear-sightedness to notice it — and that clarity itself is a gift of the teaching. A few come to see it; it is there for all.

"Here and hereafter, You protect me" — and such seeing comes through the teaching's grace.
The deeper layer

Here and hereafter, the One keeps me safe, and grace helps some people see it.

Eehaa oohaa tum rakhay — here and hereafter, You protect me. The speaker is talking to the One. It is a personal word of trust, not a rule laid down for everyone.

Gur kirpaa tay ko lakhay — by the Guru's grace, some come to see this. The verse leaves the word "some" just as it is. It says only that this seeing comes through grace. Think of a friend who points out the stars you have walked under all your life without looking up. The invitation is to become someone who sees.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing has been protecting you all along that you only recently noticed?
