Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
With your tongue, say the Name of the One. Here in this life it brings you deep peace and a great, quiet joy. And it is the one thing that stays with your soul when everything else falls away — the treasure that keeps being useful, all the way through.
This one says the Name brings joy now and goes along with you afterward.
Rasnaa japee-ai ayk naam — with the rasnaa, the tongue, say the one Name. This is the rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. It gives a double gift.
Eehaa sukh aanand ghanaa — eehaa, here in this life, it brings sukh, peace, and aanand ghanaa, great joy. Aagai jee-a kai sang kaam — aagai, onward, it goes with the soul and is useful to it.
This teaching comes back again and again in Gurbani. The Name is what the soul carries forward. Body, money, and a good name in town are all left behind. Think of packing for a long trip where only one small bag is allowed. Everything else stays at the door, but the Name fits and comes along.
Of everything you own, what would you actually want to carry with you if you could keep only one thing?
