Verse 5 of 5

Let the Good Live in Me and Make Itself at Home

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮਇਆ ਕਰਿ ॥
naanak ka-o parabh ma-i-aa kar.
Be kind to Nanak, O God;
ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਵਾਸੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ॥੪॥੭॥੧੪੫॥
mayrai man tan vaasai naam har. ||4||7||145||
let the Lord's Name dwell within my mind and body. ||4||7||145||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Be kind to me, Oneness — that is my whole prayer. Let the Name live inside me, filling my mind and my body, settling into me until it feels like home. I am not asking for grand things. Just this: let You dwell in me.

The whole prayer is simple: let the good live inside me and make itself at home.
The deeper layer

The close is tender and small: naanak ka-o prabh ma-i-aa kar — "show me kindness (ma-i-aa)." Not power, not success — just kindness, and the wish that naam har would vaasai (reside) in man tan, mind and body. The whole shabad's promises (healing, lift, steadiness) reduce to this humble ask: let the Name make its home in me. Everything else follows from that indwelling.

A Question to Sit With

If you could invite one good thing to live inside you and stay, what would it be?
