Remembering How Little You Keep Shrinks Pride

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
ga-orhee mehlaa 5.
Gauree, Fifth Mehl:
ਗਰਬੁ ਬਡੋ ਮੂਲੁ ਇਤਨੋ ॥
garab bado mool itno.
Your pride is so great, but what about your origins?
ਰਹਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਗਹੁ ਕਿਤਨੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
rahan nahee gahu kitno. ||1|| rahaa-o.
You cannot remain, no matter how much you try to hold on. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Your pride is puffed up so big — but stop and think where you actually came from, how small your beginnings were. And however tightly you try to grip the world, you cannot hold on to it forever. Nothing here stays. So why let the pride grow so tall?

Remembering where you started and how little you can keep quietly shrinks a swollen pride.
The deeper layer

This one gently shrinks pride by remembering where we came from and how little we can keep.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Garab bado mool itno — your pride is so big, yet your beginning is so small. Garab means pride. Mool means root, where we started.

Rahan nahee gahu kitno — you cannot stay, however tightly you grip. Think of holding sand in your fist. The harder you squeeze, the faster it slips out.

This is not scolding. It is a splash of cool water, a fresh way of seeing. Remembering how small we began and how little we can keep softens the swelling of ego all by itself.

A Question to Sit With

When your pride puffs up, what helps you remember your humble beginnings?
