Even a Forgetful Heart Gets Reached by Grace

ਹਰਨ ਭਰਨ ਸੰਪੂਰਨਾ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਿਤਨੋ ॥
haran bharan sampoornaa charan kamal rang ritno.
The One who is All-powerful to empty out and fill up - you have no love for His Lotus Feet.
ਨਾਨਕ ਉਧਰੇ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਿਧਿ ਮੈ ਦਿਤਨੋ ॥੨॥੧੦॥੧੪੮॥
naanak uDhray saaDhsang kirpaa niDh mai ditno. ||2||10||148||
O Nanak, I have been saved, in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. I have been blessed by the Treasure of Mercy. ||2||10||148||

In plain words

The One is fully able to empty and to fill, to take away and to give. The One is in charge of it all. And yet somehow we forget to love that One. But mercy reaches even the forgetful. In good company I was lifted up, blessed by the Treasure of kindness.

Even a forgetful heart gets reached — grace doesn't wait for us to deserve it.
The deeper layer

This one says that even a forgetful heart is reached by grace.

Haran bharan sampoornaa — the One empties and fills, and is complete master of both loss and gain. Haran means taking away. Bharan means filling up. Yet the verse notices honestly that we often have no love, no rang, for the One who holds it all. Charan kamal rang ritno — empty of love for the lotus feet.

The shabad still ends in rescue, not blame. Naanak uDhray saaDhsang — Nanak is saved in the saaDhsang, the company of the holy. He is blessed by kirpaa niDh, the Treasure of Mercy. Think of a friend who keeps inviting you over, even after you forgot their birthday. Grace does not wait for us to deserve it.

A Question to Sit With

Has kindness ever found you at a moment you felt you hadn't earned it?
