Not a Wish-Jewel but Compassion Itself

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
ga-orhee mehlaa 5.
Gauree, Fifth Mehl:
ਚਿੰਤਾਮਣਿ ਕਰੁਣਾ ਮਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
chintaaman karunaa ma-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
He is the Wish-fulfilling Jewel, the Embodiment of Mercy. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One is the wish-granting jewel of the old stories. And even more, the One is kindness itself, made real. Not a magic trinket, but mercy with a face, the tenderness at the heart of everything.

The Pause names the Oneness not a magic trinket but compassion itself.
The deeper layer

The One is like the wish-granting jewel of the old stories, and even more, the One is kindness itself.

This short line is the Rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad. It gives the One two names. Chintaaman is the chintamani, a magic jewel from old tales that grants any wish. Karunaa ma-ay means "made of compassion," kindness itself.

Guru Arjan borrows the old jewel picture and then goes past it. The deepest reality is not a gadget that hands out wishes. It is compassion, all the way through. Think of the difference between a vending machine and a grandparent who loves you. That changes every wish we bring. We come to mercy, not to a machine.

A Question to Sit With

If you knew the center of everything was kindness, what would you stop being afraid of?
