In plain words

O my mind, keep the teacher close, always, again and again. The one who guides me from confusion into clarity has made this human life shine like a jewel — precious, full of purpose. Just to catch a glimpse of that guidance fills me with love so deep I would give anything for it.

Human life is a jewel, and keeping the teaching close is what makes it shine.
The deeper layer

Human life is a jewel, and keeping the teaching close makes it shine.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the heartbeat of the whole shabad. Mayray man gur gur gur sad karee-ai — O my mind, say Guru, Guru, Guru, always. The word said three times is not just repeating. It is the mind steadying itself, like saying a loved one's name softly to bring them near.

Ratan janam — the jewel of human life. Guru Arjan keeps reminding us of this. Being alive and aware is not ordinary. It is a rare, shining chance to wake up.

Darsan means the blessed sight of the teacher or the teaching. Baliharee-ai means "I would give myself for it," the language of total love.

A Question to Sit With

What is something precious in your life that you sometimes forget to treasure?
