Gratitude Can Live in Each Breath and Bite

ਜੇਤੇ ਸਾਸ ਗ੍ਰਾਸ ਮਨੁ ਲੇਤਾ ਤੇਤੇ ਹੀ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਈਐ ॥
jaytay saas garaas man laytaa taytay hee gun gaa-ee-ai.
As many breaths and morsels as you take, O my mind - so many times, sing His Glorious Praises.
ja-o ho-ay dai-aal satgur apunaa taa ih mat buDh paa-ee-ai. ||1||
When the True Guru becomes merciful, then this wisdom and understanding is obtained. ||1||

In plain words

With every breath I take and every mouthful I eat, let me remember the wonder of the One. Each ordinary moment is a chance to feel grateful. And this wisdom — the ability to see life this way — comes as a gift, when the true Guru, my teacher, is kind to me.

Gratitude can live inside the smallest things — each breath, each bite.
The deeper layer

Gratitude can live inside the smallest things: each breath and each bite.

Jaytay saas garaas — as many saas, breaths, and garaas, mouthfuls of food. This is one of Gurbani's loveliest ways of saying "remember all the time." Remembering is not locked away for special prayer times. It is woven into the plainest parts of being alive: breathing and eating. It is like a quiet thank-you with every sip of water.

The second line keeps pride away. Taa ih mat buDh paa-ee-ai — then this mat buDh, wisdom and understanding, is found. You do not build it by trying hard. It comes ja-o ho-ay dai-aal satgur apunaa, when the true Guru is dai-aal, merciful. It is freely given.

A Question to Sit With

Could you turn one everyday thing you do without thinking — like eating breakfast — into a small moment of gratitude?
