The Name of the Creator is your beloved friend and child; it alone shall go along with you, O my mind.

So serve your True Guru, and you shall receive the Name from the Guru. ||3||

In plain words

The Name of the Creator is your dearest friend, closer than family. It is the one companion that travels with you everywhere, even where nothing else can follow.

So stay close to the teaching and serve it with love. Then this treasure is placed gently into your keeping.

The One is the single companion that stays with you through everything.
The deeper layer

The Name is the one companion who stays with you through everything.

Naam isat meet sut kartaa — the Name of the Creator is a beloved friend, even like one's own child. That turns a big idea into something close and warm.

Guru Arjan keeps coming back to this. Of everything a person collects, only the Name sang tuhaarai chaalai, goes along with you. It goes past every doorway life leads through. Toys, trophies and phones all stay behind. The Name travels on with you.

Gur tay paa-ee-ai paalai — from the Guru, it is placed in your paalai. That is the fold of your clothes, where people once tucked something precious to keep it safe. It is a gift received for safekeeping, not grabbed.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what stays with you no matter where you go or what changes?
