Verse 3 of 4

Many Practices, Many Traditions, Named with Respect

ਕਾਹੂ ਜਾਪ ਕਾਹੂ ਤਾਪ ਕਾਹੂ ਪੂਜਾ ਹੋਮ ਨੇਮ ॥
kaahoo jaap kaahoo taap kaahoo poojaa hom naym.
Some chant in meditation, some practice deep, austere meditation; some worship Him in adoration, some practice daily rituals.
ਕਾਹੂ ਹੋ ਗਉਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਹੋ ॥੨॥
kaahoo ho ga-un kar ho. ||2||
Some live the life of a wanderer. ||2||

In plain words

Some chant and recite, some hold to demanding practices; some worship with offerings, some keep daily rituals; some spend their lives wandering the world. So many ways of reaching.

So many devoted practices, from so many traditions — named here with respect, not ranked.
The deeper layer

The list of ways people reach for the One keeps growing, and each one is named with respect.

Jaap is saying holy words again and again. Taap is a hard, demanding practice. Poojaa is worship with love and offerings. Hom is making offerings into a sacred fire. Naym is a daily routine of prayer. Ga-un is a life of wandering from place to place.

These come from Hindu and yogic traditions, and from those who give up home and comfort. They are named kindly, not called mistakes.

Think of all the different doors into one big building. Some are front doors, some side doors. Each one is someone's way of knocking. This verse has no criticism in it at all. It is simply a wide, kind look at how many doors people knock on.

A Question to Sit With

What is a practice from another tradition that you find beautiful or interesting?
