After Every Path, the Heart Names Its Love

ਕਾਹੂ ਤੀਰ ਕਾਹੂ ਨੀਰ ਕਾਹੂ ਬੇਦ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥
kaahoo teer kaahoo neer kaahoo bayd beechaar.
Some live by the shore, some live on the water; some study the Vedas.
ਨਾਨਕਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਹੋ ॥੩॥੨॥੧੫੫॥
naankaa bhagat pari-a ho. ||3||2||155||
Nanak loves to worship the Lord. ||3||2||155||

In plain words

Some live beside the sacred riverbank, some out on the waters, some pore over the ancient scriptures. And for me — my heart's whole delight is simply to love the One with devotion.

After honoring every path, the heart simply names the one it loves: devotion.
The deeper layer

After honoring everyone else's path, Guru Arjan quietly names his own: loving the One.

The list ends here. Teer is the shore of a holy river, where pilgrims go. Neer means the waters. Bayd beechaar is study of the Vedas, the ancient Hindu scriptures.

Then it turns personal. Naankaa bhagat pari-a ho — what Nanak loves is bhagat, devotion, loving the One with the whole heart.

This is not a claim that everyone else is wrong. It is like a friend telling you their favorite song after listening to all of yours with real interest. It is a quiet statement of where his own heart rests.

That is the answer the pause line promised. The sweetness in everything is the One, and loving that One directly is the way Guru Arjan chooses.

A Question to Sit With

If you honored many good ways of living, which one would you say is closest to your own heart?
