Verse 5 of 5

Sing the Praises and the Hard Road Grows Crossable

ਜੈਸੋ ਗੁਰਿ ਉਪਦੇਸਿਆ ਮੈ ਤੈਸੋ ਕਹਿਆ ਪੁਕਾਰਿ ॥
jaiso gur updaysi-aa mai taiso kahi-aa pukaar.
As the Guru has taught me, so have I spoken.
naanak kahai sun ray manaa kar keertan ho-ay uDhaar. ||4||1||158||
Says Nanak, listen, people: sing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises, and you shall be saved. ||4||1||158||

In plain words

Just as the teaching taught me, so I say it out loud for you. Listen, my heart: sing the praises of the One, and you are carried safely across.

Sing the praises of the One, and the hard road becomes a road you can cross.
The deeper layer

This one says: I only pass on what the Guru taught me, and singing praise carries you across.

Jaiso gur updaysi-aa mai taiso kahi-aa pukaar — as the Guru taught me, so I call it out. Guru Arjan does not claim to invent this wisdom. He faithfully passes on what he received. It is a humble stance, and it mirrors the whole Sikh chain of Gurus, each passing the light to the next. Think of a relay race, where each runner hands on the same baton.

The shabad ends where so many do, in keertan, singing the One's praises. Kar keertan ho-ay uDhaar — sing praise, and you are carried across. UDhaar means being lifted out, set free. The hard road from the opening is now safely crossed.

A Question to Sit With

What is a piece of wisdom someone passed to you that you'd want to pass on too?
