Fearless: the One Fills Home and Wilderness Alike

ਬਾਸ ਬਾਸਰੀ ਏਕੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਉਦਿਆਨ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਾਗਿਓ ॥
baas baasree aykai su-aamee udi-aan daristaagi-o.
The One Lord and Master dwells in the home; He is seen in the wilderness as well.
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਭਏ ਸੰਤ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਡਾਰਿਓ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਰਬਾਗਿਓ ॥੨॥
nirbha-o bha-ay sant bharam daari-o pooran sarbaagi-o. ||2||
I have become fearless; the Saint has removed my doubts. The All-knowing Lord is pervading everywhere. ||2||

In plain words

The One I love is here in the busy home and out in the empty wild alike, everywhere I look.

I have become fearless. The wise and holy have cleared away my confusion. Now I see the All-knowing One filling everything, complete.

Knowing the One fills everywhere, the speaker's dread of any place loosens its grip.
The deeper layer

The One fills the home and the wild places alike, so there is no place left to dread.

Baas baasree aykai su-aamee — the one Master lives in the home. Udi-aan daristaagi-o — and is seen in the wilderness too. The One is everywhere. Its fruit is nirbha-o bha-ay, I have become fearless.

For the speaker, knowing the One fills every place means no place is empty of the One. That is a fearlessness of the spirit. It is not a promise that real danger can never come. It is like knowing your family is in the next room while you sleep. Sant bharam daari-o — the holy one cleared my doubt. Bharam is confusion, and it melts in good company. Pooran sarbaagi-o — the all-knowing One, complete, everywhere.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you feel least alone — and could that feeling reach even the places that scare you?
