No Wealth Stills the Waves; Only Devotion Does

ਤੀਨਿ ਭਵਨ ਕੀ ਲਖਮੀ ਜੋਰੀ ਬੂਝਤ ਨਾਹੀ ਲਹਰੇ ॥
teen bhavan kee lakhmee joree boojhat naahee lahray.
People may accumulate the wealth of the three worlds, but the waves of greed are still not subdued.
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਹਾ ਥਿਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਫਿਰਤੋ ਪਹਰੇ ਪਹਰੇ ॥੨॥
bin har bhagat kahaa thit paavai firto pahray pahray. ||2||
Without devotional worship of the Lord, where can anyone find stability? People wander around endlessly. ||2||

In plain words

A person could gather the wealth of all the worlds and still the waves of wanting wouldn't settle. Without love for the One, where can anyone find steady ground? They just keep wandering, hour after hour.

No amount of wealth stills the waves of wanting — only devotion gives steady ground.
The deeper layer

This one says no amount of money can calm the waves of wanting. Only love for the One gives steady ground.

teen bhavan kee lakhmee joree — someone gathers the wealth of the three worlds. That means all the riches anywhere. Still boojhat naahee lahray — the waves do not settle. Lahray means waves.

The picture is exact. Greed rises and falls like surf on a beach. It never goes still, no matter how much is piled up.

What is missing is thit, steadiness, the solid ground that things can never give. Think of standing on a surfboard compared with standing on a rock.

firto pahray pahray — people wander watch after watch, all day and all night. Only har bhagat, loving devotion to the One, gives the footing money cannot.

A Question to Sit With

What actually makes you feel settled and steady, when getting more stuff doesn't?
