Before You Were Anything, the One Was Everything

ਤਬ ਇਹੁ ਕਹਾ ਕਮਾਵਨ ਪਰਿਆ ਜਬ ਇਹੁ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਹੋਤਾ ॥

What did this person do, when he did not exist?

When the Immaculate and Formless Lord God was all alone, He did everything by Himself. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

What could this person do, back when they did not yet exist at all? When the pure, formless One was all there was, that One alone did everything.

Before you were anything, the One already was everything — that thought softens the grip of "mine."
The deeper layer

This one asks a big question: what could you do before you even existed?

Tab ih kahaa kamaavan pari-aa jab ih kachhoo na hotaa — what could this person do when they did not exist? It is a gentle question that makes the mind feel wide. It also lets the air out of the owning self's pride.

Before you were here, the One was already doing everything. Jab ayk niranjan nirankaar parabh — then there was only the One, niranjan, pure and without stain, and nirankaar, without any form. Nirankaar, the formless One, is a key word. It does not mean a faraway God. It means the endless Source the self rises from, like a wave rising from the sea.

Remember that you were once nothing, and the One was everything. That softens the grip of "I did this, it's mine."

A Question to Sit With

Does it change how you feel about "mine" to remember that everything came from one Source?
