You Don't Have to Author Everything

ਅਪਨੇ ਕਰਤਬ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਨੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਇਹੁ ਰਚਨੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥
apnay kartab aapay jaanai jin ih rachan rachaa-i-aa.
He alone knows His actions; He created this creation.
kaho naanak karanhaar hai aapay satgur bharam chukaa-i-aa. ||4||5||163||
Says Nanak, the Lord Himself is the Doer. The True Guru has dispelled my doubts. ||4||5||163||

In plain words

The One alone knows the reasons for what it does, having shaped this whole creation. The One is the true Doer of all — and the teaching has quietly cleared away my confusion.

You don't have to be the author of everything — resting in the One clears the confusion.
The deeper layer

This one says the One is the true Doer, so you don't have to write the whole story yourself.

Apnay kartab aapay jaanai jin ih rachan rachaa-i-aa — the One alone knows its own workings, having made this whole creation. The shabad began with a question about the puzzling self. It ends by resting that puzzle in the One. Kaho naanak karanhaar hai aapay — Nanak says, the One itself is the Doer.

The verse puts the doing in the One's hands. It asks the ego to let go of being the only author. Trying to be the author of everything is exhausting, and it is not even true. Think of a class play. You only have to play your part. You don't have to write it, direct it, and build the whole stage.

Then comes a personal note. Satgur bharam chukaa-i-aa — the True Guru cleared away my doubt. The understanding the pause line longed for has now been received.

A Question to Sit With

What worry might loosen if you didn't have to feel in charge of absolutely everything?
