Being Guided by Something Larger Completes You

ਕਿਆ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੈ ਕਿ ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰਾ ਕਿਆ ਇਸੁ ਹਾਥਿ ਬਿਚਾਰੇ ॥
ki-aa kichh karai ke karnaihaaraa ki-aa is haath bichaaray.
What can the mere mortal do? What is in the hands of this poor creature?
ਜਿਤੁ ਤੁਮ ਲਾਵਹੁ ਤਿਤ ਹੀ ਲਾਗਾ ਪੂਰਨ ਖਸਮ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
jit tum laavhu tit hee laagaa pooran khasam hamaaray. ||1||
As You attach us, so we are attached, O my Perfect Lord and Master. ||1||

In plain words

What can any small person really do on their own? What is truly in these hands? Wherever You gently turn me, that is where I go — for You are the One who makes me whole.

Being gently guided by something larger doesn't shrink you — it completes you.
The deeper layer

Ki-aa kichh karai ke karnaihaaraa, ki-aa is haath bichaaray — "what can the doer do, what is in this poor one's hands?" This is empty-handedness again, tender rather than despairing: the honest recognition of how little we control. Jit tum laavhu tit hee laagaa — "wherever You apply me, there I engage" — pictures the self as gently guided, aligned with the flow rather than fighting it. Pooran khasam — "the perfect One who completes me" — reassures: being carried by the One is being made whole, not diminished.

A Question to Sit With

When has following good guidance made you better than trying to figure it all out alone?
