Verse 2 of 5

A Heart With Room for the One Is Sheltered From Fear

ਜਿਤੁ ਘਟਿ ਵਸੈ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸੋਈ ਸੁਹਾਵਾ ਥਾਉ ॥
jit ghat vasai paarbarahm so-ee suhaavaa thaa-o.
That heart, in which the Supreme Lord God abides, is the most beautiful place.
ਜਮ ਕੰਕਰੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥੧॥
jam kankar nayrh na aavee rasnaa har gun gaa-o. ||1||
The Messenger of Death does not even approach those who chant the Glorious Praises of the Lord with the tongue. ||1||

In plain words

The heart where the Supreme One lives is the most beautiful place there is. No fear of ending can come near those who sing the praises of the One with their own tongue.

A heart that makes room for the One becomes the most beautiful place, sheltered from the fear of ending.
The deeper layer

The heart where the One lives is the most beautiful place there is.

Jit ghat vasai paarbarahm so-ee suhaavaa thaa-o — the heart where the Supreme One lives is the beautiful place. Paarbarahm means the Supreme One, beyond everything. The beauty here is not a view of mountains or a fancy room. It is a heart that has become a home for the One. Think of a plain kitchen that feels wonderful because someone who loves you is in it.

The verse names the jam kankar, the messenger of death. Here that means the fear of the end. That fear cannot come near those who sing praise. Rasnaa har gun gaa-o — with your tongue, sing the good qualities of the One.

This is meant as comfort, not a threat. Keeping the One in your heart gives shelter from that dread. It does not promise a life with no hard days. It promises a safe place inside, even on the hard days.

A Question to Sit With

What makes a place — or a heart — feel truly beautiful to you?
