You Needn't Be Perfect to Be Held; Just Lean

ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੀਆ ਨਾ ਜਾਪੈ ਆਰਾਧਿ ॥
sayvaa surat na jaanee-aa naa jaapai aaraaDh.
I have not understood the wisdom of serving Him, nor have I worshipped Him in meditation.
ਓਟ ਤੇਰੀ ਜਗਜੀਵਨਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਅਗਮ ਅਗਾਧਿ ॥੨॥
ot tayree jagjeevanaa mayray thaakur agam agaaDh. ||2||
You are my Support, O Life of the World; O my Lord and Master, Inaccessible and Incomprehensible. ||2||

In plain words

I haven't truly understood how to serve You, nor have I really known how to hold You in my heart. Still, You are my whole support, Life of the World — my One, beyond reach and beyond understanding, and mine all the same.

You don't have to do it perfectly to be held — honest leaning is enough.
The deeper layer

This one says you don't have to be perfect to lean on the One.

Sayvaa surat na jaanee-aa naa jaapai aaraaDh — I have not understood how to serve You, nor how to remember You. These are empty hands, held out honestly. There is no shame in it and no putting oneself down. It is simply the truth: I have not measured up.

Right away the line turns to trust. Ot tayree jagjeevanaa — You are my support, O Life of the World. The One is agam agaaDh: beyond reach, and too deep to measure. Still, the One can be leaned on.

Think of a small child who cannot tie a shoe yet. The child still climbs into a parent's lap. Not knowing how to do it all perfectly never stops you from being held.

A Question to Sit With

Can you lean on someone's love even when you feel like you haven't earned it?
