O Nanak, recognize those mortal beings as liberated, who live this way of life. ||3||7||

In plain words

The one who is no longer tied up by pleasure and pain — know that this is a truly wise person.

Recognize as free anyone who actually lives this way, whose life has become this kind of steadiness.

True wisdom shows up as steadiness — a life no longer ruled by the swing between pleasure and pain.
The deeper layer

This one says real wisdom shows up as steadiness.

dukh sukh ay baaDhay jih naahan — someone not tied up by pain or pleasure. It is like stepping off a seesaw that kept throwing you up and down. tih tum jaan-o gi-aanee — know that this person is truly wise. Gi-aanee means a wise one.

Wisdom here is not how much you know. It is how steady you are.

Then comes mukat, freedom. Guru Tegh Bahadur says it is not only for some faraway place. It is a way of living. You can see it in a person, here and now.

This is the fruit of resting in what is real.

A Question to Sit With

Do you know anyone who stays calm and kind no matter what happens? What do you notice about them?
