The Same Song: Empty From Ego, Alive From Love

ga-orhee gu-aarayree mehlaa 3.
Gauree Gwaarayree, Third Mehl:
ik gaavat rahay man saad na paa-ay.
Some sing on and on, but their minds do not find happiness.
ha-umai vich gaavahi birthaa jaa-ay.
In egotism, they sing, but it is wasted uselessly.
gaavan gaavahi jin naam pi-aar.
Those who love the Naam, sing the song.
saachee banee sabad beechaar. ||1||
They contemplate the True Bani of the Word, and the Shabad. ||1||

In plain words

Some sing and sing, and still their minds find no happiness. Sung from ego, it is wasted breath. But those who love the Name -- their singing is real, and they turn the Word over in their hearts.

The same song is empty from ego and alive from love -- the difference is the root.
The deeper layer

Amar Das distinguishes singing from ego -- wasted -- from singing rooted in love of the Name. The same outward act has opposite value depending on its root (Rang: cheap process, cheap color). Real song is contemplation of the Word, not performance.

A Question to Sit With

When you do something good, can you feel whether it comes from love or from wanting to be seen?
