Verse 3 of 5

Without Love, No Ritual Reaches the One

ik gaavahi ik bhagat karayhi.
Some sing, and some perform devotional worship.
naam na paavahi bin asnayh.
Without heart-felt love, the Naam is not obtained.
sachee bhagat gur sabad pi-aar.
True devotional worship consists of love for the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
apnaa pir raakhi-aa sadaa ur Dhaar. ||2||
The devotee keeps his Beloved clasped tightly to his heart. ||2||

In plain words

Some sing, some do their rituals. But without real love in the heart, the Name does not come. True worship is simply loving the Word, holding the Beloved tight against your heart.

Without real love in the heart, no ritual reaches the One -- true worship is holding the Beloved close.
The deeper layer

The criterion is heartfelt love. Without it, neither song nor ritual obtains the Name. True devotion is love for the Shabad and intimate closeness -- the Beloved clasped to the heart. Form without love is empty (the bridal intimacy of the Soul-Bride).

A Question to Sit With

What is something you do out of habit that would change if you did it with real love?
